Launched in 2007, Just for Us Originals is an annual art show and sale featuring unique creative works by Canadian women artists. Today wearable art is the exclusive focus of what is exhibited and sold at the show. Indeed, the intention of the show is to support and build a sense of community among professional women artists working in the field of wearable art. Featured artists appear in the show each year on an invitational basis.
Just for Us Originals was conceived by artwear designer Bonnie Glass. Based on her own experiences as a professional artist, Bonnie was convinced that women artists needed a new venue through which to exhibit and sell their work, and thereby expand the audience for their artistic creations. In early 2007, Bonnie tested her idea on a handful of friends, colleagues, and clients. They responded enthusiastically, and several united as a team to organize the first show on March 24 of that year at The Old Mill in Toronto. The inaugural event was a great success. To quote one woman who attended, "Everything was about perfect!"
In addition to Bonnie Glass, the first organizational committee included visual artist Candace Slack, retired educator Linda Wells, retired businesswoman Sue Grant, and dedicated arts patron Karen Colenbrander. Tony Lolic, Garry Toth, Louise Milnialoff, and Lynn Johannson also volunteered significant time in order to make the first show a reality. In 2008, most of the original organizers returned while designer Marie Payne and writer Janet Friskney joined the team to mount the second show on April 5, 2008, which was again held at The Old Mill Inn in Toronto. The third annual show, the first to focus entirely on wearable art, took place in October 2009 at the Harbour Banquet and Conference Centre in Oakville, Ontario.
Now in its fourth year, Just for Us Originals: The Wearable Art Show will return on Friday, September 24 and Saturday, September 25, with this year’s show taking place at the beautiful Mississauga Living Arts Centre.
